Entrepreneurship 101

From idea to execution: how businesses start, earn and stay sustainable.

Learning objectives

  • Understand what entrepreneurship really involves
  • Turn an idea into a validated problem worth solving
  • Understand business models, revenue and costs
  • Learn what keeps a business sustainable

Topic 01

What is Entrepreneurship?

Entrepreneurship is the process of identifying a problem and building a solution that people are willing to pay for.

Definition

Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is the act of starting and running a business by taking on financial risk in the hope of creating value and earning profit.

An entrepreneur is not simply someone with an idea. Ideas are common; execution is rare. What distinguishes an entrepreneur is the willingness to test an idea in the real world, learn from the response and improve it.

Topic 02

Finding and Validating an Idea

Good businesses usually begin with a problem, not with a product.

Steps to validate an idea

  • Identify a problem that people actually face and complain about.
  • Talk to the people who face that problem before building anything.
  • Build the simplest possible version of a solution.
  • Test whether people are willing to pay for it.
  • Improve the solution based on real feedback.
Key note

If nobody has the problem, no amount of marketing will create demand for the solution.

Topic 03

Business Model, Revenue and Costs

A business survives only when it earns more than it spends.

Definition

Business model

A business model explains how a business creates value for its customers and how it earns money in return.

The basic numbers every founder should know

  • Revenue — the total money earned from customers.
  • Cost — the money spent to make and deliver the product or service.
  • Profit — what remains after costs are subtracted from revenue.
  • Cash flow — the actual money moving in and out of the business.
Example

A simple illustration

If you sell a handmade product for ₹500 and it costs ₹300 to make and deliver, your profit is ₹200 per unit. Selling 100 units in a month earns ₹20,000 in profit before other expenses such as marketing.

Topic 04

Staying Sustainable

Starting a business is difficult; keeping it running is harder and more important.

A sustainable business keeps its customers happy, controls its costs, maintains healthy cash flow and continues to improve. Growth that is faster than what the business can support often creates more problems than it solves.

What keeps a business going

  • Repeat customers who trust the product.
  • Costs that stay under control as the business grows.
  • Enough cash in hand to handle slow months.
  • A willingness to adapt when the market changes.
Key note

Profit is an outcome. Solving a real problem well is what produces it.
